Man United Fan Killed by Arsenal Fan for Celebrating Salah’s Late Equalizer

In the Kyobugombe Trading Centre of Western Uganda, a football rivalry turned deadly when a Manchester United fan, 22-year-old Benjamin Okello, lost his life following an altercation with an Arsenal supporter, identified only as Onan. The dispute erupted over Liverpool star Mohamed Salah’s late equalizer in a match against Arsenal, stirring emotions that tragically escalated to violence.

According to Edmond Tumwesigye, the Kaharo Sub County Chairperson, the incident took place in a video hall where fans had gathered to watch the game. “Two men fought on Sunday night in Kyobugombe trading centre, and one of them was rushed to Bukinda Health Centre before being referred to Rugarama Regional Referral Hospital, where he died,” Tumwesigye said.

The conflict reportedly began when Okello, the Manchester United fan, started celebrating Liverpool’s 81st-minute equalizer, causing frustration for Onan, the Arsenal supporter. Witnesses say Okello’s celebratory act included throwing popcorn at Onan, intensifying tensions. After the match, Onan allegedly attacked Okello with a stick, striking him to the ground.

Kabale District Police Commander Joseph Bakaleke confirmed receiving reports about the incident and stated that the alleged assailant is currently on the run. “We received information indicating that two supporters of different teams were involved in a scuffle, resulting in one assaulting the other. Unfortunately, the injured fan passed away at the hospital,” Bakaleke noted.

Police have launched a manhunt for Onan and have urged the deceased’s family members to remain calm as investigations unfold. “We have appealed to the deceased’s relatives to stay calm while we continue gathering information from eyewitnesses and pursue the suspect,” Bakaleke added.

The tragedy underscores the fervor of local football fandom and the unforeseen dangers when rivalries spiral out of control.
