Senator Alli Calls for Unified National Effort to Protect Journalists, End Impunity for Crimes Against Press

Senator Sharafadeen Alli, representing Oyo South (APC), has issued a compelling call to action, urging Nigerians to take a unified stand in safeguarding journalists from violence and intimidation. In a statement commemorating the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, Senator Alli highlighted the indispensable role of journalists in upholding democracy and the rule of law.

The statement, signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Akeem Abas, and released to journalists in Ibadan on Saturday, paid tribute to the bravery of Nigerian journalists who persist in their mission despite significant risks. Senator Alli emphasized the necessity of recognizing journalists as guardians of truth and accountability, underscoring the public’s role in protecting them from harm.

“Today serves as a powerful reminder that no democratic society can thrive without a safe and independent press,” Senator Alli stated. “Journalists are fundamental in exposing issues that drive accountability, justice, and transparency.”

Senator Alli expressed concern over the escalating dangers facing journalists, from harassment and threats to physical violence and murder—crimes that too often go unpunished. This climate of impunity, he warned, fosters fear and suppresses freedom of expression, thereby endangering democracy itself.

“Those who attempt to silence journalists through violence or intimidation must be brought to justice,” he declared, pledging his commitment to championing policies that uphold journalists’ rights to work without fear.

The senator further called on all sectors of society—media organizations, civil society groups, and government agencies—to collaborate in creating a safer environment for journalists. He stressed the importance of robust judicial and law enforcement mechanisms to ensure that those who perpetrate violence against journalists face swift prosecution.

“On this International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, let us strengthen our dedication to justice and press freedom,” he urged. “Let us honor the memory of journalists who have made the ultimate sacrifice for truth by renewing our collective commitment to a free and secure press.”

Senator Alli expressed deep respect and appreciation for the resilience of Nigerian journalists, reaffirming his commitment to advancing policies that safeguard press freedom and curb impunity against the press.
