Oyo NUJ Demands Justice Over Brutal Killing of Journalist Ojo Peter

The Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called for a thorough investigation into the killing of veteran journalist, Ojo Peter, who was shot dead by suspected armed robbers in Ibadan on August 18, 2025.

Peter, a former reporter with Parrot Extra and Daily Monitor, was gunned down in broad daylight along the Molete–Oke Ado axis of the city. According to eyewitnesses, the assailants dispossessed him of his cross bag. Despite his pleas that it contained no money, the robbers still shot him in the back, leaving him fatally wounded.

The incident, which occurred around 2 p.m., has sparked outrage across the media community. His death was formally brought to the notice of the NUJ on Monday, nearly three weeks after the tragedy.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Acting Chairman of Oyo NUJ, Sola Oladapo, described the killing as “senseless and unfortunate,” while demanding urgent action from security agencies.

“The Union is saddened by the news of Ojo Peter’s killing by suspected armed robbers. He was a dedicated crime reporter who for several years contributed immensely to public safety through his work,” Oladapo said.

“We call on the Oyo State Police Command to intensify investigations and ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous crime are brought to justice.”

Oladapo, speaking on behalf of the Union’s substantive Chairman, Ademola Babalola (currently on annual leave), extended condolences to the bereaved family. He urged them to find solace in the lasting legacy Ojo Peter left behind as a journalist committed to truth and justice.

The late reporter’s brother, Peter Enahoro, also expressed deep sorrow over the killing, lamenting that his sibling had left home “healthy and full of life” but was cut down while struggling to earn a living.

The media fraternity in Oyo State has been thrown into mourning, with colleagues describing Ojo Peter as a fearless and professional journalist who made his mark in crime reporting. The NUJ’s demand for justice has amplified calls for accountability, with many insisting that his killers must not go unpunished.
