Oba Owolabi Olakulehin Ascends to Olubadan Throne 89 Years After Birth

Today marks a momentous occasion as Oba Owolabi Olakulehin ascends the throne as the Olubadan of Ibadanland, 89 years after his birth. Born on July 5, 1935, in Okugbaja Village near Akanran, Oyo State, Nigeria, his journey to the throne began with a traditional Yoruba naming ceremony on July 12, 1935, where he was named Akinloye Olalere Owolabi Olakulehin.

In a grand ceremony at the historic Mapo Hall, Oba Olakulehin will don the prestigious beaded crown, officially becoming His Imperial Majesty, the Olubadan of Ibadanland. This event, attended by President Bola Tinubu, governors, ministers, traditional rulers, and other dignitaries, marks a significant milestone for both the Olakulehin family and the entire community.

Oba Olakulehin’s rise to the throne is historically significant, as he is the first from his lineage to hold this esteemed title. He will reside in the newly built ultramodern palace at Oke-Aremo, inaugurated by Governor Seyi Makinde. This palace will serve as the official residence for subsequent Olubadans, a departure from the tradition of using personal residences.

The coronation also signifies a revival for Ita-Baale Olugbode, Oba Olakulehin’s ancestral homestead in Ibadan. The last ruler from this area was Baale Ajayi Oyesile Olugbode, who reigned from 1851 to 1864. The Ita-Baale Olugbode area holds deep historical and religious significance, being home to the Christ Apostolic Church Olugbode, established by Olubadan Akinyele.

Oba Olakulehin’s ascent began in 1983 when he became Mogaji (family head) of the Ige Olakulehin family. He was installed as the Jagun Balogun of Ibadanland in 1986 and rose through the ranks, joining the Olubadan-In-Council in 2006. In 2016, he became the Balogun of Ibadanland and served for eight years before ascending to the Olubadan throne.

His journey from Mogaji to Olubadan involved climbing the hierarchical ladder within the traditional council, demonstrating his dedication and leadership. Today, he will perform traditional rites at the Oluwo Labosinde Compound and the Ose Meji Shrine before Governor Makinde presents him with the staff of office at Mapo Hall.

Oba Olakulehin’s early life included primary education in Ibadan, a teaching stint, and vocational training at Yaba Technical Institute. He served in the Nigerian Army, rising to the rank of Major before retiring in 1979. He founded FAKOL Nigeria Ltd and engaged in various business ventures, including a successful printing press and bakery.
