In a significant move to provide safe and clean drinking water to its residents, the Executive Chairman of Ibadan Northwest Local Government, Alhaji AbdulRahman Olanrewaju Adepoju, has inaugurated the chlorination of wells across the council area. This initiative is part of the local government’s broader agenda to improve public health and reduce the prevalence of water-borne diseases in the community.
According to a press release signed by Mrs. Ramat Alade, Head of Information Unit, Ibadan Northwest Local Government, the chlorination project aligns with the state government’s commitment to delivering basic amenities, particularly in rural areas.
Alhaji Adepoju emphasized the importance of the initiative, highlighting that it aims to curb the spread of diseases like cholera, typhoid, and diarrhea, which are common in communities relying on untreated water sources.
“Our administration is dedicated to safeguarding the health and well-being of our people. By ensuring the availability of safe drinking water, we are taking a vital step in protecting our citizens from preventable diseases,” Alhaji Adepoju remarked during the flag-off event.
He assured residents that the chlorination project will be regularly monitored and maintained to ensure its long-term effectiveness.
Alhaji Adepoju also used the opportunity to call on residents to contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment by avoiding open defecation, improper refuse disposal, and maintaining proper sanitation in their homes.
He urged food vendors to prepare meals in hygienic conditions, stressing that cholera can easily spread through contaminated food and water. Additionally, he advised nursing mothers to carefully monitor their children’s diet and environment to safeguard their health.
The flag-off ceremony, which took place at Oke Seni, saw participation from various community leaders, residents, and stakeholders, who expressed their appreciation for the government’s timely intervention.
The residents applauded the council for taking such decisive steps to combat the threat of water-borne diseases, particularly during the rainy season when these illnesses are most rampant.
In her remarks, the Head of Local Government Administration, Mrs. Rachael Olabode, noted that the chlorination project will have a lasting positive impact on the quality of life of the people in Ibadan Northwest. She encouraged the community to continue practicing good hygiene to prevent disease outbreaks.
Prominent figures accompanying the chairman included the Vice Chairman, Alhaji Ganiy Abiodun Omotosho, the leader of the House, Mr. Gbemileke Nelson, and the Local Government PDP Chairman, Alhaji Lukman Adesina.
