Senator Sharafadeen Alli (APC-Oyo South), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, has renewed his call for comprehensive and inclusive electoral reforms to bolster Nigeria’s democratic foundation. This advocacy was highlighted during his address at the North-West Zonal Legislative Interactive Session on the Electoral Act, held in Katsina.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media, Akeem Abas, Senator Alli emphasized the critical role of inclusive policies in transforming Nigeria’s political system. Themed “Legislation and Participation of Women and Young Persons in Elections and Leadership,” the session attracted government officials, legislators, and community leaders, all working towards broadening political representation.
Senator Alli reiterated the National Assembly’s commitment to refining Nigeria’s electoral laws, stressing the need for policies that empower underrepresented groups to play active roles in governance. He commended Governor Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina for facilitating the event, which brought together a wide array of voices, including youth, women, and civil society organizations.
“Our consultations have taken us across the country, from Lagos and Abuja to Ibadan and Port Harcourt, allowing us to listen directly to the people,” Senator Alli remarked. “This is a step toward fostering a democratic process that resonates with all Nigerians.”
The senator praised the political environment fostered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, describing it as conducive to progressive reforms. He noted that the administration’s far-reaching changes aim to accelerate national development and enhance the participation of marginalized groups.
Encouraging women and young Nigerians to engage actively in politics, Alli described these groups as essential to Nigeria’s sustainable progress. The session received support from international partners, including the Government of Canada, UN Women, and Kimpact Initiative for Development, reflecting the global community’s interest in strengthening Nigeria’s electoral framework.
Senator Alli expressed optimism that these legislative sessions would pave the way for reforms that authentically represent the aspirations of all Nigerians.
