President Tinubu Announces Passing of Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Honoring His Legacy of Service

In a solemn announcement, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, conveyed the passing of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who died at the age of 56 on Tuesday night in Lagos after a period of illness.

Lt. General Lagbaja, born on February 28, 1968, was appointed as Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023, a role in which he brought an unwavering dedication to defending Nigeria and upholding the highest standards of military leadership. His career, spanning over three decades, was marked by courage, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to national security.

Lagbaja’s journey began in 1987 when he entered the Nigerian Defence Academy as a member of the 39th Regular Course. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps on September 19, 1992. He swiftly proved his mettle as a young officer, serving as a platoon commander in both the 93 Battalion and the 72 Special Forces Battalion, where his tactical prowess and leadership skills became evident.

Throughout his distinguished career, Lt. General Lagbaja was at the forefront of some of Nigeria’s most challenging security operations. His service included pivotal roles in critical internal security initiatives such as Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in Southeast Nigeria, and Operation Forest Sanity in Kaduna and Niger States. His contributions were instrumental in countering threats and restoring peace in conflict zones, earning him deep respect within the military and among the Nigerian populace.

A dedicated officer and a man of intellectual rigor, Lt. General Lagbaja was also an alumnus of the U.S. Army War College, where he earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies. This advanced training underscored his commitment to continuous learning and professional development, equipping him with the skills necessary to lead in times of both peace and conflict.

Lt. General Lagbaja’s legacy is not only defined by his military achievements but also by his character—he was widely admired for his integrity, professionalism, and dedication to the welfare of his troops. He is survived by his wife, Mariya, and their two children, who, along with the nation, mourn the loss of a beloved husband, father, and patriot.

President Tinubu extended his deepest condolences to Lt. General Lagbaja’s family and to the Nigerian Armed Forces, honoring his invaluable contributions to the nation’s stability and security. “Lt.
