Jubilation in Ibadan as Olubadan-Elect Rashidi Ladoja Returns for Traditional Rites

Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, erupted in jubilation on Monday as former governor and Olubadan-elect, Senator Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, made a triumphant return to the ancient city ahead of the commencement of his traditional rites.

Ladoja, who is set to ascend the revered throne of Olubadan of Ibadanland, was received with pomp and excitement by a large crowd of supporters, political associates, admirers, and well-wishers who had patiently gathered along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway to herald his homecoming. Many in the crowd waved, sang, and danced as they welcomed their revered son, who is widely regarded as a unifying figure in Ibadan’s political and cultural history.

On arrival, the Olubadan-elect proceeded straight to his ancestral family house at Isale-Osi, where he was formally received by family members and traditional custodians in preparation for the commencement of his initiation and traditional rites.

His return marks a significant step in the transition process following the passage of the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who joined his ancestors on Monday, June 7, 2025—just two days after celebrating his 90th birthday. In line with Ibadan customs, a 21-day mourning period was observed in honour of the late monarch before the arrival of the new king-elect.

The ascension of Senator Rashidi Ladoja, a respected statesman, successful businessman, and seasoned politician, is widely seen as a historic moment for Ibadanland. His leadership is expected to blend modern governance experience with deep-rooted traditional values, a development many indigenes believe will usher in peace, unity, and renewed progress for the ancient city.

Speaking with reporters, some of his supporters described his emergence as “a blessing for Ibadanland at a critical time.” One of them said: “Senator Ladoja has always been a father figure and a leader who understands the yearnings of the people. His coming to the throne will surely strengthen Ibadan’s cultural pride and bring about socio-political stability.”

Traditional rites and ceremonies for the Olubadan-elect are expected to commence immediately, paving the way for his official coronation in the coming weeks.
