Retired Chief Judge of Ondo State, Adeyemo Afonja Dies at 90.

The Oyo-born Retired Chief Judge of Ondo State, Hon. Justice Sydney Adeyemo Afonja was on Friday confirmed dead.

According to information gathered by the inquisitiores.com Rtd Chief Justice Sydney Afonja died early morning on Friday at a ripe age of 90.

He was born precisely at 5:30 a.m on Sunday,22nd January, 1933 to the Late Asiwaju of Oyo, Chief Samuel Ajeigbe Afonja (Baba Adajo 77 of Olokomeje Compand) and Late Chief(Mrs.) Victoria Ibiyemi Afonja.

Retired Justice Sydney Adeyemo Afonja was born to the royal family of Agunloye/ Alowolodu in the ancient Oyo town of Oyo, but he grew up in Akure. Late Justice Afonja possessed a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Master’s degree in Law. He retired as the Chief Judge of former Ondo State, before the creation of Ekiti State.

While in service, he was also Deputy Director of Public Prosecution in the Defunct Western Region, and pioneer Director Public Prosecution and Solicitor-General in the former Ondo State Ministry of Justice.

Late Justice Afonja was a Lecturer at the Nigerian Law School, Victoria Island, Lagos, and Chairman, Armed Robbery Tribunal in the State, and Conference of Chairmen of Armed Robbery Tribunals Nationwide between 1986 and 1994.

The late Jurist was a Deputy Chancellor, Anglican Diocese of Ibadan, Chancellor, Anglican Diocese of Oyo, and member of the Standing Committee at the General Synod of Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, the eminent jurist, who was widely travelled, was also honoured in Oyo town as an incorruptible judge by a group known as Youth Alliance Movement of Nigeria.

Justice Afonja was the Mayegun of Igede-Ekiti and Atayese of Idanreland.
