EndBadGovernance Protest: Oyo CP Calls for NUJ Partnership to Combat Fake News, Maintain Public Order

The Commissioner of Police (CP) for Oyo State Command, CP Ayodele Sonubi , has called on Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists to join forces with the police to prevent the spread of fake news and ensure accurate reporting ahead of the “EndBadGovernance” protest scheduled to start on August 1, 2024.

In a statement made after a Congress meeting of NUJ, Oyo State Council at the NUJ Press Center, Ibadan, CP praised the Oyo State journalists for their dedication to accurate reporting and cooperation with law enforcement.

He emphasized the critical role the media plays in shaping public perception and maintaining peace during significant events.

“Protests are a fundamental aspect of democratic expression, providing a platform for people to voice their concerns and communicate their grievances to the government,” CP stated.

“However, it is crucial that these protests remain peaceful and do not escalate into violence or property damage. Our primary goal is to safeguard lives and property while ensuring order during these events.”

The CP expressed concern over the potential for misinformation to incite unrest.

“The recent spread of false reports, such as the alleged jailbreak in Imo State and the purported burning of a police patrol vehicle in Delta State, highlights the dangers of fake news. Such misinformation can provoke unwarranted actions and escalate tensions,” he warned.

To combat this issue, CP Sonubi urged journalists to verify the authenticity of their sources and seek accurate information from official channels, such as the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) or the control room.

“The proliferation of fake news, particularly through social media, can have dire consequences, especially among our youth who may uncritically share such information,” he noted.

The CP appealed for collective responsibility in the fight against misinformation.

“Journalists have a crucial role in this battle. Your reports are highly influential and can shape public behaviour and attitudes. It is essential that you adhere to the highest standards of journalistic ethics—accuracy, objectivity, and neutrality.”

In conclusion, CP called for continued collaboration between the police and the media.

“We need your support to manage this situation effectively. Your commitment to accurate reporting will help prevent misunderstandings and maintain peace. Let us work together to ensure that our community remains safe and informed,” CP added.
