Nigerian Government Allocates N3 Billion to States, FCT for Flood Mitigation, Agricultural Revival

In a decisive move to address the devastating impact of recent floods and bolster agricultural productivity, the Nigerian Federal Government has announced the allocation of N3 billion to each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This substantial financial intervention aims to strengthen the states’ ability to combat flooding and prepare for a successful dry season farming cycle.

The announcement was made by Mr. Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, during a press briefing at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi. Mr. Edun, who had earlier inspected flood-affected areas in Kebbi State, emphasized the proactive steps taken by the National Economic Council to support states across the federation in managing the repercussions of flooding.

“Allocating N3 billion to each state and the FCT is a strategic decision by the National Economic Council to mitigate the adverse effects of flooding this year,” Mr. Edun stated. “This will enable states like Kebbi to adequately prepare their farmers for the critical dry season farming, which is anticipated to be well-planned and effectively executed.”

Mr. Edun further highlighted that this initiative is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring food security at affordable prices, thereby helping to lower inflation and stabilize the national economy. He also conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to supporting state-level efforts to enhance security, resilience, and productivity, ultimately reinforcing Nigeria’s status as a leading agricultural hub.

Supporting Mr. Edun’s statements, the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, expressed concern over the severity of the flooding in several local governments, noting that the damage exceeded his previous assessments. Despite these challenges, he lauded the resilience and determination of the people of Kebbi, assuring them of the government’s full support as they prepare for the upcoming dry season farming.

In addition to the N3 billion allocation, Senator Bagudu revealed that the federal government had also approved a Renewed Hope Infrastructure Fund. This fund will finance various critical infrastructure projects, including the strategic Badagry-Sokoto road, further demonstrating the government’s commitment to national development and disaster resilience.
