Newly Inaugurated NUJIC Executives Urged to Make Members’ Welfare a Top Priority

In a message emphasizing the importance of union solidarity and commitment, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Oyo State Council, Comrade Demola Babalola, called upon the recently inaugurated executive members of the NUJ Information Chapel (NUJIC) to prioritize members’ welfare as a cornerstone of their leadership.

The new executive team comprises Fasasi Ismail as Chairman, Afolakemi Bamgbose as Vice Chairman, Adeniji Olamide as Secretary, and Temilola Akarah as Assistant Secretary. The roles of Treasurer and Financial Secretary are held by Aminat Busari Adeleke and Bukola Ibikunle, respectively.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony held at the Ministry of Information and Orientation’s Film Theatre in Agodi, Ibadan, Comrade Babalola highlighted the essential role of union support, particularly in a period marked by economic challenges and evolving media dynamics. He stressed that the welfare of journalists is central to maintaining productivity and upholding the integrity of the profession.

“Our journalists need the assurance that the union stands behind them, not just in words but in practical support. Members’ welfare is a non-negotiable aspect of our work,” Babalola stated. He encouraged the new NUJIC executives to foster unity, transparency, and to implement member-centered policies while upholding ethical standards in journalism.

The State Council Chair pledged ongoing support from the council, urging the NUJIC leaders to explore innovative resources for members, promote mental health initiatives, and create professional development platforms.

In his acceptance speech, NUJIC Chairman Comrade Ismail Fasasi expressed his commitment to advancing the union’s goals. “During our first term, we achieved significant milestones. This term, we are building on that foundation to reach even greater heights,” he assured. Fasasi reiterated his dedication to fostering a robust journalistic community that champions members’ rights and welfare.

In his welcome address, NUJIC Electoral Committee Chairman Comrade Damola Adegoke, represented by Comrade Opeyemi Ogunniyi, highlighted the committee’s adoption of digital communication tools, including digital sales and registration of nomination forms. He commended the support from the NUJ Oyo State Council and acknowledged the efforts of former NUJ Secretary Comrade Rotimi Babalola in ensuring a successful election process.

In his goodwill message, Dr. Bode Ladipo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Orientation, urged the new executives to establish a strong foundation for future achievements. Other dignitaries, including former NUJ Oyo Secretary Comrade Rotimi Babalola, former NAWOJ Chairperson Comrade Adekitan Adeagbo, and NAWOJ B Zone Secretary Comrade Adeola Adewole, advised the newly sworn-in executives to stay committed to the welfare of members and exercise effective leadership.
