The Grassroots and Development Journalists Association of Nigeria (GDJAN) has extended its congratulations to the newly elected President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahya, and his Team A+A for their sweeping victory at the 2024 NUJ Delegates Conference held on Wednesday in Owerri, Imo State.
In a statement signed by its Secretary, Mrs. Ramat Alade, GDJAN described the victory as monumental, likening it to a “contest between a super-heavyweight and a featherweight,” based on the decisive margin of the election results. Yahya secured 436 votes, far outpacing his closest rival, Dele Atunbi, who garnered 97 votes, while Mohammed Geruba placed third with 39 votes.
“We, the entire members of GDJAN, rejoice and celebrate with the new NUJ President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, and his Team A+A on their overwhelming and historic victory. This remarkable outcome deserves to be studied by students of political science and politicians alike. It serves as a blueprint for achieving unassailable success in elections,” the statement read.
The group also commended the immediate past NUJ President, Chief Chris Isiguzo, for organizing a free, fair, and peaceful election, hailed by participants and observers as one of the most credible in NUJ history.
“No incidents of disqualification, venue changes, vote buying, or ballot snatching marred the process. All candidates and their teams participated without dispute, and the final results were accepted by all. Chief Isiguzo has set a shining example for government institutions on conducting credible elections without bias or misuse of incumbency,” GDJAN stated, emphasizing that Isiguzo’s tenure has left an enduring legacy.
GDJAN also applauded the stellar performance of Comrade Ademola Babalola, the Director-General of Team A+A’s campaign and Chairman of the Oyo State NUJ Council. Babalola’s leadership, charisma, and strategic acumen were recognized as key factors in securing victory for Team A+A.
“Comrade Ademola Babalola’s exceptional leadership has not only solidified his reputation among his peers in the Oyo State Council and the B Zone but also established him as an outstanding image builder and campaign strategist. His efforts proved instrumental in the sweeping success of Team A+A,” the statement added.
While celebrating the victory, GDJAN urged Yahya to focus on the significant responsibilities ahead. The association advised the new NUJ leadership to prioritize unity among all state councils, equitable treatment of members, and the promotion of capacity building for journalists.
“An overwhelming electoral mandate comes with immense expectations. Having secured victory across all zones, President Yahya must ensure inclusivity and unity within the union. Equally important is the need to promote professional development through seminars, workshops, and the adoption of modern communication techniques and digital tools to enhance journalistic practice,” GDJAN noted.
The association expressed confidence in Yahya’s ability to deliver on his promises while fostering growth and professionalism within the union.
“We wish Comrade Alhassan Yahya and his team a successful tenure as they usher in a new era of excellence and progress in the NUJ,” the statement concluded.
This congratulatory message from GDJAN underscores the high hopes placed on Yahya’s leadership and the recognition of exemplary contributions from key figures who ensured the success of Team A+A’s campaign. As Yahya embarks on his presidency, expectations are high for a transformative and inclusive administration.
