ABUJA—As the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) marks its 70th anniversary, the President of the union, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, has lauded the resilience, dedication, and unwavering commitment of Nigerian journalists to upholding press freedom and ethical journalism.
In a statement celebrating the milestone, Abdullahi expressed profound gratitude to members of the union for their relentless efforts in speaking truth to power, holding authorities accountable, and amplifying the voices of the marginalized.
“For seven decades, the NUJ has remained a strong pillar in championing press freedom, defending journalists’ rights, and ensuring that the highest ethical standards are maintained in the industry,” Abdullahi stated.
He emphasized the union’s crucial role in fostering democracy, urging members to reflect on its rich legacy and renew their commitment to safeguarding independent journalism.
“As we mark this historic milestone, let us rededicate ourselves to the ideals of truth, fairness, and justice. Together, we can continue to build a society where the press remains free, independent, and fearless in its pursuit of accountability,” he added.
The NUJ, established in 1955, has been at the forefront of advocating for press freedom and journalists’ welfare in Nigeria. As it celebrates 70 years of impactful journalism, Abdullahi called on media practitioners to uphold the values that have sustained the profession through decades of political, economic, and social change.
