Students Declare Nationwide Strike as NANS Condemns Steep Petrol Price Increase, Demands Immediate Reversal

In a bold move that underscores growing frustration among Nigeria’s youth, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has declared a nationwide strike slated for September 15, 2024. This action comes as a direct response to the recent, sharp increase in petrol prices announced by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

The fuel price hike, which saw the cost of petrol soar from N617 per litre to an unprecedented N897 per litre, took effect on September 3, 2024, and has been met with widespread condemnation. NANS, representing millions of students across the country, has taken a firm stand against what it describes as an “unbearable burden” on Nigerians, particularly students who are already struggling with the high cost of living.

In a strongly worded statement titled “Fuel Price Hike: A Threat to Our Future,” NANS National Senate President, Henry Okunomo, voiced the association’s deep dissatisfaction with the government’s decision. He labeled the price hike as an “egregious act” that exacerbates the economic hardship faced by ordinary Nigerians, calling for an immediate reversal of the increase. Okunomo further criticized the government’s approach, urging for a more compassionate and student-friendly governance style.

The statement reflects a broader sense of anger and disillusionment among Nigerian students, who see the fuel price hike as a reflection of broader governance failures. NANS has called on all students, civil society organizations, and the general public to join the planned peaceful protests, which it envisions as a unified stand against economic oppression. “We must rise in unison to demand a better deal for Nigerian students and the masses,” the statement declared.

The association did not hold back in its critique of the NNPCL, accusing the company of “gross incompetence” and a persistent “inability to deliver on its mandate.” NANS described the NNPCL as a “behemoth of inefficiency,” blaming it for perpetuating a cycle of hardship and despair among the Nigerian populace. The students’ body is demanding not only a reversal of the fuel price hike but also a thorough overhaul of the NNPCL’s operations, calling for greater accountability and efficiency in the management of the nation’s resources.

This impending strike signals a potential escalation in tensions between the government and the student body, as NANS remains resolute in its commitment to fighting for the welfare of Nigerian students. With the strike date drawing near, all eyes are now on the government’s next move, as the country braces for what could be a significant showdown between the nation’s youth and its leaders.
