In a rare display of unity, political figures and journalism stalwarts gathered in Ibadan on Sunday to honor the late Madam Wulemot Aweni Babalola, mother of Chief Ademola Babalola, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Oyo State. The occasion, an 8th-day Fidau prayer held at Elekuro High School, drew a significant crowd that bridged political divides, reflecting the legacy of the respected matriarch.
Alhaja Wulemot Aweni Babalola, who passed away on November 2 at the age of 76, was a devout woman whose community contributions resonated deeply with family, friends, and well-wishers. Her passing brought together dignitaries from various political affiliations, illustrating the unity that such a profound loss can inspire. The event, organized by the NUJ Media Committee, was led by Comrade Seye Ojo, Vice Chairman of NUJ in Oyo State, who highlighted the broad impact of Madam Babalola’s legacy.
Political Leaders Put Rivalries Aside
Deputy Governor Alhaji Adebayo Lawal, representing Governor Seyi Makinde, addressed attendees, praising Madam Babalola’s exemplary life and calling for unity amid political diversity. “She lived a life worthy of emulation,” Lawal remarked, urging the gathering to carry the spirit of togetherness forward.
A significant presence from the All Progressives Congress (APC) included Senator Teslim Folarin, former Senate Leader and 2023 APC gubernatorial candidate; former NLRC chairman, Alhaji Fatai Ibikunle; APC Acting Chairman Alhaji Moshood Olayide Abas; and Hon. Ayodeji Abass-Aleshinloye, a former ALGON chairman. Folarin commended the atmosphere of camaraderie and noted, “The caliber of guests here reflects that Demola Babalola has built bridges across the country.”

Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Ayodele Sonubi, led a delegation that included Public Relations Officer Mr. Adewale Osifeso. Their presence highlighted the mutual respect between law enforcement and the media in Oyo State, honoring the Babalola family in their time of loss.
Popular gospel artist and Fresh FM Chairman, Evangelist Yinka Ayefele, lent his voice to the occasion, adding a touch of solemnity and hope through his music, which resonated with the gathering’s reflective atmosphere. Dr. Dare Akande, CEO of Bellagio Air and founder of American International University Nigeria, was also among the notable attendees, supporting the family and further illustrating the high regard in which Madam Babalola was held.
