Jannik Sinner Leads Italy to Historic Davis Cup Victory, Matches Federer and Serena’s Feat

Jannik Sinner cemented his place in tennis history as he guided Team Italy to a historic Davis Cup title, achieving a feat only accomplished by legends Roger Federer and Serena Williams in the Open Era. Sinner became the third player ever to win at least one set in every match he played throughout a calendar year, a testament to his consistency and dominance in 2024.

Italy’s Long-Awaited Triumph

The 23-year-old No. 1-ranked player capped his sensational season with a commanding 7-6(2), 6-2 victory over the Netherlands’ Tallon Griekspoor in the final, securing Italy’s second consecutive Davis Cup title. The victory ends a 24-year drought, marking Italy’s third title overall, following their first win in 1976.

Earlier, Matteo Berrettini gave Italy an early advantage with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Botic van de Zandschulp, setting the stage for Sinner to close out the championship on the indoor hard court of the Palacio de Deportes Jose Maria Martin Carpena in southern Spain.

With this victory, Italy became the first nation since the Czech Republic in 2012-2013 to defend the Davis Cup title, sparking joyous celebrations among their passionate fans, who filled the 9,200-capacity arena with drums, megaphones, and chants of “Italia! Italia!”

Sinner’s Breakthrough Season

Sinner’s performance in 2024 has been nothing short of extraordinary. His 4-0 record in Malaga, including a crucial doubles win with Berrettini in the quarter-finals, underscores his importance to Italy’s success. This victory adds to an impressive season in which Sinner compiled a 73-8 record, won eight singles titles, and claimed his first two Grand Slam crowns at the Australian Open and US Open.

His rise, however, was not without challenges. After being cleared of wrongdoing in a doping investigation earlier this year, Sinner returned to the court with renewed focus, building an unbeaten streak of 14 matches and 26 sets, including a title at the ATP Finals.

“This trophy means a lot to us,” Sinner said during the celebrations. “If it weren’t important, I wouldn’t be here.”

Berrettini’s Redemption Arc

Matteo Berrettini’s contribution to Italy’s success was equally significant. Replacing Lorenzo Musetti in the semi-finals, Berrettini went 3-0 in singles matches, showcasing resilience after a period marred by injuries and illnesses.

“I missed these moments,” Berrettini reflected. “Not just the wins or losses, but the chance to be part of something this special.”

Against van de Zandschulp, Berrettini overcame a slow start, rallying to dominate the match and pave the way for Sinner’s heroics.

A United Squad Under Volandri

Captain Filippo Volandri’s leadership proved instrumental in Italy’s back-to-back triumphs. Rallying his players around the motto “We want to make history,” Volandri fostered a team spirit that carried them through tense moments.

As the final point was sealed with Sinner’s ace, the Italian squad erupted in celebration. Sinner was hoisted in the air by his teammates, and the team joyously lifted the Davis Cup trophy together, symbolizing their collective effort.

The Netherlands’ Historic First Final

Despite their loss, the Netherlands achieved a milestone by reaching their first-ever Davis Cup final. Tallon Griekspoor and Botic van de Zandschulp fought valiantly, with Griekspoor briefly rallying in the second set of his match against Sinner. However, the Italian’s composure proved insurmountable.

Italy’s Golden Year in Tennis

This victory capped a stellar year for Italian tennis. Just days earlier, Italy’s women’s team secured the Billie Jean King Cup by defeating Slovakia, underscoring the nation’s dominance on the global tennis stage.

Jannik Sinner’s remarkable rise and Italy’s unified team effort have redefined their legacy, making this victory not only historic but a testament to the resilience and brilliance of Italian tennis.
