International Women’s Day 2026: Ajadi Celebrates Nigerian Women, Calls for Greater Political Participation

A leading governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has congratulated women across Nigeria on the occasion of the 2026 International Women’s Day, urging them to take more active roles in politics by seeking elective positions in future elections.

International Women’s Day, celebrated globally on March 8, commemorates the struggle of women for equality, justice, and liberation, while highlighting critical issues such as gender equality and women’s rights. The celebration traces its origin to early 20th-century labour movements in Europe and North America.

In a statement issued on Sunday to mark this year’s celebration, Ajadi emphasized that the role of women in nation-building cannot be overstated. He noted that women have continued to make invaluable contributions to the development of families, communities, and the nation at large.

The PDP chieftain recalled the historic roles played by notable Nigerian women such as Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Margaret Ekpo, and Wuraola Esan, whose sacrifices and leadership helped shape Nigeria’s democratic and social development. He encouraged today’s generation of women to follow in their footsteps by actively participating in governance and seeking elective offices.

Ajadi also called on political leaders and stakeholders to create more opportunities for women to contest and occupy leadership positions, noting that the current ratio of men to women in elective offices in Nigeria remains discouraging.

“I celebrate and congratulate our women on this year’s International Women’s Day. The role they play at home, in society, and in politics cannot be underestimated. They deserve greater respect and recognition,” he said.

He urged women not to remain passive participants in the political process but to aspire to leadership roles.

“Women must move beyond being supporters at political rallies to becoming candidates and leaders. They should boldly contest for elective positions and help shape the future of our nation,” he added.

Ajadi also used the occasion to call for an end to domestic violence against women, stressing that women deserve dignity, respect, and protection, particularly given their vital role in nurturing future leaders.

“If we treat our women with the respect and care they deserve, our nation will experience greater peace, unity, and unprecedented development,” he concluded.
