Wild Elephant Charges, Tramples Tourist in India’s Bandipur Tiger Reserve

Viral Video Sparks Outrage

BANDIPUR, KARNATAKA, INDIA (ASIA) — A tourist from Kerala narrowly escaped death after being charged and trampled by a wild elephant at the Bandipur Tiger Reserve in Karnataka, India, in an incident that has gone viral and ignited a storm of criticism online.

The dramatic encounter occurred along the highway linking Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, which passes through the famed reserve — part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and home to hundreds of elephants. According to reports, the man had stepped out of his vehicle to take a close-up photograph of the animal, which was feeding on carrots collected from a nearby truck. Witnesses said the tourist used a camera flash, startling the elephant.

Footage recorded by Daniel Osorio shows the elephant suddenly charging at the man, knocking him to the ground, and pinning him briefly under its foot before retreating. Forest officials confirmed that the victim sustained injuries but survived, and was rushed to a local hospital for treatment.

Signs posted along the road warn visitors to remain inside their vehicles for their own safety and the protection of wildlife. “This incident is a strong reminder to follow the rules of wildlife reserves and to let trained authorities — not people on foot — handle situations like this,” Osorio captioned the viral video.

Social media users have condemned the tourist’s actions, with one commenting, “Deserved, all the elephant did was to protect itself.” Another wrote, “Stop behaving like animals. Just google the top speed of an elephant, then compare it with your own and be thankful they usually just mock-charge!”

Park authorities expressed concern that despite repeated warnings, thrill-seekers continue to flout safety rules in the reserve. Some wildlife experts noted that elephants — particularly females with calves — can be extremely protective and easily provoked by human intrusion.

The incident has reignited discussions on the need for stricter enforcement of forest regulations, heavier fines for rule-breakers, and improved tourist education in sensitive habitats.

Bandipur Tiger Reserve, located in Chamarajanagar district of Karnataka, is one of India’s most visited wildlife sanctuaries and plays a critical role in conserving endangered species, including tigers and elephants. Officials stress that respecting wildlife boundaries is key to ensuring safety for both humans and animals.
