PDP Governors Vow to Defend Democracy, Reposition Party Ahead of National Convention

Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy, strengthening the party, and ensuring the success of its forthcoming national convention scheduled for November 15, 2025.

The position was contained in a communique issued at the end of the PDP Governors’ Forum 7th meeting of 2025, held on Saturday, August 23, at the Government House in Gusau, Zamfara State.

The Forum, chaired by Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, said it deliberated extensively on national security, democratic governance, the state of the nation, and preparations for the party’s national convention.

The governors expressed profound appreciation to party members and supporters across the country, praising their loyalty in the face of “serious intimidation and anti-democratic actions” allegedly orchestrated by the APC-led Federal Government during the recent bye-elections.

They further commended PDP leaders for remaining resolute despite what they described as “orchestrated defections” aimed at destabilizing the party. The Forum insisted that such distractions cannot diminish the PDP’s grassroots strength or Nigerians’ growing yearning for the return of “affordable living and relative security” under PDP administrations.

“This sad situation should only be seen as a sign of the desperation of a political party with no agenda, no vision, and doomed to face inevitable rejection by the masses,” the communique read.

Reaffirming its support for the resolutions of the 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in July, the Forum pledged to resist all attempts by “anti-party forces” to derail the November 15 convention. It described the PDP as “the only democratic institution and viable alternative for restoring Nigeria along the path of good governance and national development.”

On security, the governors commended Governor Dauda Lawal’s efforts in curbing insecurity in Zamfara State but decried ongoing killings in Katsina, Plateau, Niger, Benue and other parts of the country. They called on the federal government to take greater responsibility in safeguarding lives and property.

They also condemned what they termed “over-militarization” of the August 9 bye-elections, which they said were marred by irregularities, vote-buying, and violence. The Forum urged Nigerians to remain vigilant in protecting their votes.

The governors thanked the people of Zamfara State for their hospitality, while congratulating Governor Dauda Lawal on his infrastructural, health, education, and security achievements.

They also commiserated with the government and people of Zamfara State on the passing of the Emir of Gusau, as well as the government and people of Oyo State over the recent loss of traditional rulers.

Those present at the meeting included:

  • Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed (Bauchi State) – Chairman of the Forum
  • Dr. Dauda Lawal (Zamfara State) – Host Governor
  • Dr. Agbu Kefas (Taraba State)
  • Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri (Adamawa State)
  • Seyi Makinde (Oyo State)
  • Senator Douye Diri (Bayelsa State)
  • Senator Ademola Adeleke (Osun State)

The communique was signed by Senator Bala Mohammed, Governor of Bauchi State and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum.
