Senator Sharafadeen Alli: Blending Tradition, Excellence, Service in Leadership of Oyo South

By Akanni Muhammed

Senator (Barr.) Oloye Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, Ph.D., the distinguished Senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District, stands tall as a model of purposeful leadership—anchored in tradition, strengthened by education, and defined by unwavering service to humanity.

A proud son of the Oloofiere Compound, Mapo, Ibadan, Senator Alli’s rise through the traditional hierarchy—from Mogaji to Jagun, and now Ekarun Balogun of Ibadanland—reflects his integrity, humility, and deep-rooted commitment to the advancement of his people and culture.

Senator Alli’s educational journey began at UNA Primary School, Ekotedo, and Progressive Day School, Aladorin, both in Ibadan. He proceeded to Ahmadiyya Grammar School, Eleyele, where his brilliance and leadership qualities first shone. His pursuit of excellence led him to the University of Ibadan, where he earned his Law degree and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1987. He later obtained a Master’s in Law (LL.M) from the same institution.

Driven by an unrelenting thirst for knowledge, Senator Alli recently bagged a Ph.D. in Leadership and Strategic Studies from the Federal University, Lokoja — a testament to his passion for continuous learning and his readiness for higher responsibility in governance.

Beyond politics and public service, Senator Alli finds relaxation in sports, with a particular love for table tennis. His political base remains firmly rooted in Ward 3 of Ibadan North Local Government, Oyo State.

From his early days in public office, Senator Sharafadeen Alli has demonstrated a blend of intellect, discipline, and compassion. He first served as Executive Chairman of Ibadan North Local Government between December 1991 and November 1993, leaving behind a legacy of efficient administration and people-centered development.

His political and administrative trajectory later saw him serve as Secretary to the Oyo State Government and as the pioneer Chief of Staff to then-Governor Rashidi Ladoja, who now reigns as the Olubadan of Ibadanland. He also served meritoriously as Chairman of the Oodua Group of Companies, where his leadership contributed to the stability and growth of the organization.

In 1998, Senator Alli was elected to represent Oyo South under the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP), but the military’s interruption of the democratic transition prevented his inauguration. However, his return to the Senate in 2023 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) reaffirmed his enduring relevance, political resilience, and the people’s confidence in his leadership.

In his first term at the 10th National Assembly, Senator Sharafadeen Alli has proven himself to be a reformer, performer, and compassionate representative. His dedication was recognized at the 14th Young Achievers Nigeria Awards, where he was honoured as the “Most Valuable, Outstanding and Performing Senator of the Year.”

His achievements span multiple sectors, with visible results across education, infrastructure, healthcare, and economic empowerment:

  • Educational Empowerment: Over 1,600 SS2 students across Oyo South have benefited from free coaching and WAEC support initiatives.
  • School Infrastructure Development: Donation of computers, solar panels, and classroom furniture to schools, including Methodist Grammar School, Igboora, and Ansar-ud-Deen Grammar School, Oke-Ado, Ibadan.
  • Community Development: Provision of boreholes, transformers, and solar-powered streetlights across wards, improving access to water and electricity.
  • Healthcare Support: Free medical outreach programmes and donations of medical and non-medical equipment to hospitals and health centers.
  • Economic Empowerment: Food bank initiatives for widows and traders, alongside youth training in e-commerce, digital literacy, and agribusiness.
  • Sports Development: Promotion of grassroots sports as a tool for youth engagement and talent discovery.

Within the National Assembly, Senator Alli’s voice has been both consistent and impactful. He has sponsored no fewer than five bills and actively contributes to debates and motions that address critical national issues. Currently, he serves as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agricultural Institutions and Research Institutes, where he has been instrumental in strengthening Nigeria’s agricultural education and research capacity.

Through his influence, several professionals from Oyo South—including medical doctors, nurses, Ph.D. holders, and paramilitary officers—have secured employment opportunities in federal institutions and agencies. He also continues to collaborate with bodies like the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) to advance healthcare delivery and welfare across his district.
