Ajadi Backs Opposition Coalition, Says Single Candidate Strategy Key to Safeguarding Nigeria’s Democracy

A governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has thrown his weight behind the move by opposition leaders to field a single presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing the decision as a critical step toward preserving Nigeria’s democracy.

Ajadi said the emerging consensus among opposition figures to unite against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) reflects political maturity and a shared commitment to preventing what he described as a drift toward a one-party state.

The position followed a high-level summit of opposition parties held in Ibadan, which brought together prominent political figures including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Rotimi Amaechi, Aminu Tambuwal, Rauf Aregbesola, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, among others. The leaders reportedly agreed on the need to present a unified presidential front in the next election cycle.

Speaking on the sidelines of the summit, Ajadi commended Governor Makinde for hosting the gathering, describing it as a demonstration of political foresight and administrative competence.

“The decision by opposition leaders to field a single presidential candidate is both strategic and commendable. It reflects a genuine desire to protect Nigeria’s democracy and provide a credible alternative to the ruling party,” Ajadi said.

He stressed that unity among opposition parties would be decisive in the 2027 elections, noting that fragmentation had previously weakened their chances. According to him, the new approach signals selflessness and a willingness to place national interest above personal ambition.

Ajadi warned that any breakdown in the emerging alliance could undermine the objective of rescuing the country from its current socio-political challenges. He urged opposition leaders to remain focused and resist any attempt to disrupt their unity.

“Nigeria’s democratic future depends on the ability of opposition parties to rise above individual interests and work collectively. This convergence of progressive minds must translate into concrete political action capable of restoring public confidence in leadership,” he added.

He further noted that the unity drive offers renewed hope to citizens, particularly those grappling with economic hardship and disillusionment with governance.

Ajadi concluded by reiterating his commendation for Governor Makinde’s role in convening the summit, expressing optimism that the initiative would galvanise broader national support and strengthen democratic values across the country.
