The race for the 2027 general elections in Oyo State gathered momentum on Wednesday as Senator Sharafadeen Alli, representing Oyo South Senatorial District, formally obtained the All Progressives Congress (APC) expression of interest and nomination forms for the governorship contest—emerging as the first aspirant to take the step.
Senator Alli was joined by other National Assembly hopefuls from the state who also secured their nomination forms, signalling early mobilisation within the party ahead of the elections.
Among them were Senator Yusuf Akintunde, seeking to represent Oyo Central Senatorial District, and Honourable Remi Oseni, who is vying for the Oyo South senatorial seat.
Also present were several House of Representatives aspirants, including Honourable Akeem Adeyemi (Oyo Federal Constituency), Honourable Tajudeen Abisodun Kareem (Atisbo/Saki East/Saki West Federal Constituency), Honourable Akin Alabi (Egbeda/Ona Ara Federal Constituency), and Honourable Olamiju Alao-Akala (Ogbomoso South/Ogbomoso North/Orire Federal Constituency).
Speaking with journalists after obtaining his forms, Senator Alli said his governorship ambition is driven by a strong desire to deliver effective, people-centred governance and address developmental gaps, particularly at the grassroots.
He pledged to make governance more accessible and responsive, emphasising that his aspiration is anchored on empowering communities and improving living standards across Oyo State.
“My journey in public service has prepared me for this responsibility. I understand the needs of our people and the urgency of delivering practical solutions,” he said.
Reflecting on his experience, Alli highlighted his tenure as Executive Chairman of a local government, where he said he prioritised grassroots development through improved infrastructure and strengthened institutions.
He also referenced his service as Secretary to the State Government, noting that he played a key role in policy implementation, as well as his position as Chief of Staff to former Governor Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, where he contributed to effective governance and coordination.
As a serving senator, Alli added that he has consistently championed initiatives and legislative interventions aimed at improving the welfare of his constituents.
He expressed confidence in his preparedness for the governorship role, assuring residents of decisive leadership and immediate action if elected in 2027.
The development signals the early consolidation of political interests within the APC, as aspirants position themselves ahead of what is expected to be a keenly contested election season in Oyo State.
