Former Manchester United winger Lee Sharpe has voiced concerns over manager Rúben Amorim’s handling of Amad Diallo, suggesting that constant positional changes are hampering the young attacker’s progress.
Sharpe, who was a key figure at Old Trafford during the early 1990s, believes Diallo is being denied the chance to build momentum due to being shuffled around the pitch.
“When you’re a winger playing wing-back, having to defend from your own corner flag, it takes a little bit out of you to then go and do it at the other end as well,” Sharpe told reporters.
The former England international pointed out that Diallo had been one of United’s brightest sparks in attack before his injury setback last season. However, since Amorim’s arrival, the Ivorian has been tasked with playing as a No. 10, a wing-back, and even in central roles — something Sharpe argues has unsettled his rhythm.
“I don’t think it’s great for someone like him to keep moving around,” Sharpe added. “He’s a wide player, so it’s very difficult to tuck in as a No. 10. It’s not doing him any favours. He’s definitely suffered under Amorim’s formation.”
Despite his criticism, Sharpe praised Diallo’s attitude and effort, insisting the issue lies not with the player but with how he is being used.
“His work rate is phenomenal, that’s not a problem,” Sharpe said. “I think his best place is in the final third, going past people, driving at them. Playing him as a wing-back means he doesn’t get to do that as often as he should.”
With United still struggling to find consistency under Amorim, Sharpe’s remarks echo the growing concerns among supporters that talented players like Diallo are not being deployed where they can have the greatest impact.
